Fresh Ginger not only has tons of potential health benefits, it also adds a great flavor that complements citrus, bananas, and durians. Ginger’s health benefits have been used medicinally for centuries. It is known for its immune-boosting and stomach-settling abilities. It has shown to be effective in treating nausea from morning sickness and chemo treatments, also helps with motion sickness. Some studies have shown it can also speed up digestion.

Ginger has natural anti-inflammatory properties for people afflicted with osteoarthritis. Studies have shown that ginger may help prevent skin and colorectal cancers while killing ovarian cancer cells. It may also possess blood thinning and cholesterol lowering properties, which help with heart disease.

Ginger adds a warming, spicy flavor to fruit and green smoothies. Some say it works best with pineapple and other citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons and lime, while it also blends well with sweet fruits, like bananas, apples and vanilla bean. Ginger can be combined with other spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon.

Cut small peeled pieces off and throw in the blender if you are using a lower speed blender, you may want to dice it or grate it using a parmesan, or nutmeg grater.

Need to know:

Don’t go crazy with your ginger, a little bit goes a long way. Ginger may interfere with certain medications, such as Warfarin. Some may be allergic to it.
